TAIWAN, Hsinchu – 18 January, 2013 – MediaTek Inc., a leading fabless semiconductor company for wireless communications and digital multimedia solutions, and OmniVision Technologies, Inc. (NASDAQ: OVTI), a leading developer of advanced digital imaging solutions, today announced the availability of reference designs for the latest dual-core and quad-core smartphone platforms with support for PiP (Picture in Picture PIP) and ViVTM (*Video-in-Video ; ViVTM) camera functionality. Integrated with OmniVision’s new ViVTM technology, MediaTek’s high-performance smartphone solutions now offer a high level of integration and richer use-cases using both the front- and rear-facing cameras. Pictures taken by the front camera can now be seamlessly grafted to the images taken by the main rear camera. In addition to increasing the usage frequency of the front camera, these capabilities can also be used to overlay pictures and videos taken by the front and rear camera to create exciting new images and significantly enhance the user experience.

With the rapid growth of the mobile handset market, consumer demands for smartphones are becoming increasingly diverse and personalized. Although front cameras have become a standard feature in smartphones, they have not been fully utilized by consumers due to their low-resolution and lack of related applications. The announcement of these reference designs with OmniVision today helps to change all that by making it easier to deploy these richer PiP and ViV features to consumers.

“MediaTek has accelerated its R&D into the integration of camera image signal processing technology hoping to fulfill this particular market demand. Now I am pleased to announce the immediate availability of these latest smartphone reference design with the new and innovative PiP and ViV functions from OmniVision integrated” said Jeffrey Ju, General Manager of MediaTek’s Wireless Communication Business Unit.
