MediaTek Completes Development of 5G Terminal Prototype with Eight Mobile-Phone-Sized Antennas
MediaTek collaborates with Huawei on New Radio (NR) Interoperability Development Testing (IODT) to accelerate the commercialization of 5G devices
HSINCHU, Taiwan – September 21, 2017 – MediaTek Inc. today announced it successfully completed the development of a 3GPP 5G standard terminal prototype integrated with eight mobile-phone-sized antennas, as part of a collaboration with Huawei on New Radio (NR) interoperability testing (IODT) at a transmission rate of more than 5Gbps. MediaTek is the industry’s first chipset maker to develop mobile-phone-sized antennas and completed a 5G IODT with telecommunications equipment manufacturer. The test showcased the notable potential of 5G technology in sub-6GHz band commercial applications, demonstrating the rapid progress made in delivering a global 5G end-to-end supply chain.
Organized by China’s IMT-2020 (5G) Promotion Group, this IODT testing is an essential part in verifying Phase II technology solutions for China’s 5G technology research and development trial. The test conducted by MediaTek and Huawei was based on 3GPP Rel-15 5G NR standards-defined parameter sets, frame structures, new waveforms, Polar/LDPC channel coding and other key technologies with equipment and testing specifications provided and formulated by China’s IMT-2020 (5G) Promotion Group.
MediaTek’s 5G terminal prototype with eight mobile-phone-sized antennas and Huawei’s 5G base stations successfully completed interoperability testing for enhanced Mobile Broadband (eMBB) and Ultra Dense Network (UDN) in the 3.5GHz band. The testing results indicated that NR can reach the same throughput rate for indoor environments as that of external dipole antennas, proving that 5G devices can support high-speed, large-bandwidth, multi-antenna processing.
Dr. Wen Tong, Huawei Fellow and CTO of Huawei Wireless Networks, said, “5G is accelerating globally especially in China, Huawei is positively participating in the testing and verification of the 5G key technologies. It reaches great achievements during this IODT test of 5G New Radio. Huawei will continue investing in 5G R&D innovation, strengthen cooperation with industry partners, and make a contribution to build up the strong 5G industry ecosystem.”
“5G technology is a revolutionary innovation. We are excited to work with Huawei to complete 5G NR IODT testing, which is a milestone in the innovation, production development and commercialization of 5G device technology,” said Kevin Jou, Senior Vice President and CTO, MediaTek. “MediaTek will continue to invest in 5G innovations to drive global 5G technology standards, working closely with industry partners and governments to bring sub-6GHz 5G technology to commercial applications by 2020.”
